How Gratitude Helps You Sleep

Committing ideas or thoughts to paper has a remarkable effect – it makes them real. And research has shown that writing a gratitude journal for just 15 mins a day can help you sleep better and for longer.

if you’re a warrior or suffer with anxiety, you’ll know all too well how thoughts of tomorrow’s potential problems or what you failed to get done today can ruminate and delay your trip to dreamland. You need to embrace the idea of gratitude.

Being grateful is an aspect of mindfulness where you live more in the present, notice the good things in life and are thankful for those. Cultivating an attitude of gratitude throughout the day is known to boost happiness and life satisfaction, as well as filling your mind with positive thoughts as you drift off to sleep.

And don’t be shy. Express this gratitude, show that colleague that you really appreciated her help, thank the fitness trainer for a fantastic class or a friend for a thoughtful text.

Every time you look for the positive and are thankful, you reinforce what’s positive about your life. Being mindful of such things calms your mind at bedtime, so you’ll nod off faster, slumber longer wake refreshed.

Get the gratitude habit

  • Complete a gratitude journal ideally throughout the day or at the end of each day – try to include 3 to 5 things for which you’re thankful everyday. Either choose a small handy sized book to carry with you, or download an app for easier jotting across the day.

  • Verbalise and express your thanks out loud at least once a week – wether it’s a ‘thank you’ for your morning latte or for some kindness from a stranger.

  • Thank those who have made a difference to your life throughout the year. No expensive gifts or gestures are needed – a handwritten card or letter speaks volumes about your heartfelt thanks.

Three things that made you happy

Every night before you go to sleep, name 3 things that happened that day that made you feel happy, then think of three things that made you feel good about yourself. Write them down or say them aloud, it’s up to you. It’s a great way to reinforce a healthy self-image and a positive mindset and ensure you go to sleep with happy thoughts in your head. this works brilliantly with children, too, and has the added benefit that you get to hear a bit about their day and the things that genuinely bring them joy – often surprising things. Share your own list with them, so that they can hear about your day as well.

Let me know if you tried any of the above mentioned tip!!

Once we have trained the mind to look inward, we are ready to look outward at how we interact with others in the world. Today it is common to talk about amplifying gratitude in our lives (we are all #blessed), but attaching a hashtag to a moment is different from digging to the root of all we’ve been given and bringing true, intentional gratitude to our lives everyday.
